Operations management is the backbone of firms’ financial performance, while the financial resources provide operations with the capital support and opportunities of better risk management. Firms can obtain the financial resources from the debt and equity markets as well as from inter-firm loans and trade credit. In all these channels, firms’ financial performance is a critical metric that determines the accessibility and the cost of the financial resources. Hence, firms’ operational and financial decisions are often inseparable. In this seminar series, we will discuss a few topics in the interface of operations, finance and economics, which include operations with capital financing, operations with trade credit, operations and market valuation, etc. The objective is to broaden our knowledge in this intersecting area for studying such business problems using an integrated approach.



Guoming Lai is an Associate Professor of Operations Management at the McCombs School of Business, the University of Texas at Austin. He has been interested in the research problems in the areas of supply chain management, operations/finance, operations/marketing, and healthcare. He has published 19 articles in the journals of Management Science, Operations Research, MSOM, POM and several others. Professor Lai received his PhD degree and master's degree in Operations Management from Carnegie Mellon University. He also earned a master's degree and a bachelor's degree in Control Engineering from Tsinghua University in China.
